Low Vision Assistive technology (AT) has come a long way and have some major improvements over the last 30 to 40 years that have allowed people with low vision and who are blind to access information independently. Mark has been blind since birth as a result of rubella. With the help of low vision assistive technology, Mark can do things independently without people thinking that he needs to be helped all the time.
Low Vision AT has allowed Mark to be more involved with community organisations and he is now able to minimise the need of having support workers.
All through his life, he has been using braille to do his writing and reading but more importantly, it has allowed him to explore avenues such as mathematics. That is where his qualifications are as Mark holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mathematics and Computing from the Swinburne University of Technology. AT has also allowed him to present to groups and to work with people in a way that you would expect from a sighted person.
Mark has a built-in screen reading component on his phone as well as a screen reader that is installed onto his computer that allows him to access the information that is displayed in a way that he can listen to the content. In addition to that, he uses low vision assistive devices that help with the identification of products and labels, which he uses to mark food products etc. To get around safely and effectively, Mark uses a white cane which would allow him to find obstacles. Other pieces of assistive technology that he uses are global positioning service apps or specially made devices that allows him to know where he is at any time.
The best part of my life now with the assistance from assistive technology is the ability to say I have options now that are available, and being able to say if I want to explore something, I can with assistive technology.
