Why did you choose to become an occupational therapist?
I chose occupational therapy because I wanted to work with people. “I was very excited about a field that enables people to be independent in activities that are most important to them”. There are many diverse opportunities within the field of OT and it lets me do what I love.
What area of practice do you work in?
I work in the field of Assistive Technology. Assistive technology (AT) solutions offer opportunities to people with disabilities to stay connected and engaged in meaningful, active and community life. People are using technology to control homes, access computers, communicate, and move about in their communities of choice.
What has been most challenging and rewarding about being an OT?
Occupational therapists work with a range of people. It’s all about understanding what people want to achieve to improve their quality of life and to regain independence. This often requires thinking outside of the box and you might have to put yourself in the client’s shoes to come up with the best solution for them. While the journey of identifying right Assistive Technology solution can be challenging, the outcome can be very rewarding. The joy on someone’s face when they are able to complete their day-to-day task is priceless.
How has being a member of Occupational Therapy Australia helped overcome these challenges?
OT Australia offers support to members through professional development programs, network group meetings and easy access to profession-specific information.
